Potential side effects of ALA are largely unknown. Mainly because when used effectively in normal doses none have been reported.

If you’re blood sugar is very low and you ingest high quantities of ALA there is potential for you to develop symptoms that are associated with very low blood sugar; headache, weakness, hunger, sweating, confusion and dizziness. Again, these symptoms are only indirectly related to ALA.
