What is the Nootropic Phosphatidylserine & How Does it Affect Memory? | Momental

Phosphatidylserine (PtdSer) is a healthy fat that covers and protects cells in our brain. It’s known for its use in Alzheimer’s and ADHD, by improving thinking skills for all ages, altering exercise induced stressors, and even enhancing athletic performance.

Phosphatidylserine is a key component for optimal brain health as it maintains proper cellular function as a major component of cell membranes. The cell membrane is responsible for moving nutrients into the cell and pushing waste products out.

Phosphatidylserine typically comes from 3 sources: bovine, soy, and sunflower. Bovine sources have largely been eliminated as people had an irrational fear of mad cow’s disease and cite that animal brain can contain viruses. Much like when swine flu struck and the price of pork went down. Fortunately plant based alternatives are available for vegetarian and vegan diets. PtdSer is heavily concentrated in our brain tissue and found in every cell in our body. It works for us by allowing glucose (blood sugar) to be taken up more readily by our brain. With this affect on uptake, our brain is fueled with fast energy that allows us to think more clearly with faster processing. In addition, people experience enhanced creativity and longer durations of focused, and clear mental energy.

Improve Critical Thinking By Supplementing Phosphatidylserine

PtdSer is responsible for getting those creative juices flowing. Once you clear out all the negative thoughts and preconceived notions you can finally focus and start to change yourself for the better.

When it comes to creativity, idea generation and execution, supplementing with PtdSer is highly effective. Your previous 2-hour window of energy and focus can potentially last all day. People report thinking clearly even when working into the night. You can complete demanding tasks early or later in the day. This provides excellent work flexibility to remain responsive whenever you need to be.

In a large study of 494 cognitively impaired patients, phosphatidylserine was provided in 300mg doses per day for 6 months. Compared to the placebo group, those receiving the PtdSer experienced statistically significant improvement in cognitive parameters and behavior.

Geriatric patients aged 65-93 exhibited moderate to severe cognitive decline as scored on the Mini Mental State Examination and the Global Deterioration Scale. They were examined before therapy started and at 3 and 6 months after receiving phosphatidylserine. Behavior and cognitive performance were measured on the Plutchik Geriatric Rating Scale and the Buschke Selective Reminding Test [1]. These measures are peer reviewed and used for their statistical accuracy in determining a meaningful improvement.

Administration of 100mg daily of phosphatidylserine for 12 weeks was given to a group identified with age related memory impairment. The results showed that learning and memory tasks of daily life showed benefit as compared to the placebo group. There was improvement on both computerized and standard neuropsychological performance tests [2].

Identify Apoptosis & Cellular Death With Phosphatidylserine

PtdSer has been used in studies as a marker to indicate cellular apoptosis or necrosis. Apoptosis is programmed cell death and contributes to the aging process. Necrosis is simply the cell experiencing immediate breakdown in which the integrity of the outer layer is broken and the cell’s contents flow out into the extracellular space. They both result in cellular death but the pathway is different. Apoptotic cells will maintain the integrity of the cellular membrane for a longer duration. In the early stages of apoptosis changes take place at the cellular surface. PtdSer helps identify intact, necrotic or apoptotic cells depending on its positioning within or around the cell [3].

This movement of PtdSer allows for faster identification of problematic cells and leads to faster therapy with proteins and antibodies that will assist in cleaning up the dying cell. Specifically, macrophages that clean up the dying cell induce the release of TGF-B1, which has an antiinflammatory effect and suppresses proinflammatory mediators. Researchers instilled apoptotic cells in vivo and observed a positive resolution to acute inflammation [4].

Enhance Memory By Ingesting Phosphatidylserine

PtdSer has been studied extensively for its potential impact on memory. Specifically for those who suffer from the most debilitating forms of cognitive decline like Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia. So far studies show mixed results with a lot of difficulty in monitoring when and how much is considerable for displaying memory improvement. Defining parameters that are testable ads a level of complexity as well.

Much of the memory loss associated with Alzheimer’s results in a buildup of plaque (beta amyloid) that is typically cleaned up by protein compounds in younger, healthy adults. This plaque interferes with our brain’s ability to communicate effectively in key areas involved with memory and learning.

The effectiveness of these proteins decreases for all of us as we age but is far more pronounced in patients suffering from Alzheimer’s. New research is focusing on eliminating the compounds responsible for inhibiting these proteins that would normally be going to work cleaning out all the brain gunk. Allowing normal learning and memory processes to go uninhibited.

In the meantime, PtdSer proponents and users have found its ability to boost memory and mental clarity too good to pass up. It is thought that PtdSer is effective at improving memory by activating a common neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. Alzheimer’s has a strong correlation with a lack of acetylcholine [5].

Soy derived PtdSer also appeared to improve the memory function of elderly Japanese participants with memory complaints [6].

Increase Focus Through Phosphatidylserine Nootropic Supplementation

By feeding your brain and reducing anxiety and stress, you’re simply able to focus at a higher level. Worries go out the window. This is why nootropic supplements have become immensely popular. Deadlines become much easier to tackle. You see clearly what is before you and how you need to work to accomplish your goals in the most effective order. Planning any creative move can be the slowest part. Once you have your thoughts fully organized you’re free to gel and lay waste to what lies before you.

Previously, aged animal studies have shown efficacy for cognitive benefit with PtdSer supplementation. The therapeutic effect of phosphatidylserine was then studied in patients with dementia as they show a declining ability to focus and stay on task. The authors found that the participants who received 100mg, 3x per day experienced statistically significant benefit across two questionnaires assessing behavioral improvement. These findings are on par with the efficacy found in animal studies for phosphatidylserine as an effective use for cognitive decline [7].

Decrease Anxiety With The Nootropic Phosphatidylserine

One of the greatest benefits of PtdSer is it’s awesome potential to affect stress positively and alter anxious feelings.

People who suffer daily from excess neuroses will find relief in PtdSer. Young adults with neuroticism scores above the median took 300mg of PtdSer daily for one month and experienced feeling less stressed and having a better mood. [8].

Anxiety cripples your ability to concentrate and hinders focus for any creative undertaking. You’ll reflect and realize when something that usually set you off on an anxious journey, no longer does so. It’s amazing how much you can accomplish when stress and anxiety are controlled to your benefit.

Naturally anxious people are typically eager to begin supplementing with PtdSer. It really doesn’t take a whole lot of stimuli to experience adrenaline spikes and pesky fight or flight sensations. Athletic competition or work deadlines set this off, and although it may benefit some to be overly stimulated, It all too often pushes you over the edge and leads to anxiety and a lack of focus. So there is a point of diminishing return with anxiety driven by fight or flight responses. These fight or flight responses to a varying degree are at the root of stress and how we perceive our mood.

Improve Athletic Performance With The Nootropic Phosphatidylserine

Endurance levels were benefited during high intensity training with supplementation of Phosphatidylserine (PS) vs placebo (P). It contains ergogenic properties intended to improve physical performance, stamina and recovery. The following study looked at 2 groups of male cyclists . At 85% VO2 max, time to exhaustion in the PS group increased from 7:51 to 9:51 with an average +/- 1.39. (P) group remained unchanged at 8:09 to 8:02 avg +/- 0:54 [9].

Other evidence points to further athletic benefits even after short term use. In addition to aiding exercise capacity during high intensity cycling, PS supplementation leads to beneficial performance during intermittent running.

Recover Faster With The Nootropic Phosphatidylserine

If you’re training hard on a regular basis and not taking Phosphatidylserine, you’re making a huge mistake. This healthy fat will help change your life. Especially as you age but continue to put those tough hours in at the gym. This is why we not only encourage nootropic supplements for mental performance, but also for physical recovery during rehab, which makes nootropics excellent for gaining an advantage for tissue strengthening.

PtdSer lowers the impact and stress caused by overtraining by controlling inflammation [10]. Findings suggest that soy PtdSer can change cortisol levels that build up during strength overtraining and promote the feeling of well being while reducing perceived muscle soreness.

To achieve therapeutic efficacy, doses are recommended at 100mg, 2-3x per day. 100-500mg per day is also safe. Effective doses vary from one person to the next because we don’t all metabolize exactly the same.

PtdSer can be taken with or without meals. Once you have established a baseline you can test whether a higher dose will lead to further benefit. Since levels of PtdSer have the potential to stay elevated with consistent use, many people choose to level off with 100mg daily once desired effects have taken place.

Starting with 100mg of phosphatidylserine is a good way to get your feet wet. Then listen to your body. Too little and no noticeable effect. Some people are very sensitive to the compound and might experience big changes right away. Others will take too little and may experience no noticeable effect.

Phosphatidylserine lowers cortisol levels and this is important because cortisol isn’t all bad. It also helps regulate energy levels. Remember excess cortisol is not good especially when it is being influenced by stress factors. So if you experience sleepiness or lower energy than normal, take PtdSer with other nootropic energy boosting compounds like Ginkgo, MCTs, and Caffeine from green tea combined with L-theanine to really round out a more holistic approach to your nutrition and health as it pertains to more energy.

This is preferred over drinking 4-6 cups of coffee each day, which really only stimulate you. It does not provide a real source of energy. Stacking these ingredients among others brings a more robust nutrient profile to your day and improves memory, focus and productivity.

It Doesn’t contain the harmful side effects from typical drugs used for ADD/ADHD, anxiety and mood disturbances. This makes it one of the best nootropics for mood and one of the best nootropics for social anxiety. Beneficial to work into your diet given its extremely low risk for side effects.

Remember, bovine (cow) sources of PtdSer have been almost completely eliminated due to fear of mad cow’s disease. You cannot get mad cow’s disease but if you still don’t believe me, find solace in the fact that vegan and vegetarian options are the norm.

Some people experience insomnia or upset stomach with doses >300mg daily. Most people do not experience negative effects from supplementing with PtdSer.

Phosphatidylserine (PtdSer) is a fat (phospholipid) nootropic that supports brain health as a critical component to all cell membranes. Research lends support to PtdSer’s efficacy in boosting memory, critical thinking, and focus. It works by directly supplying much needed food to your brain for fast utilization. It is specifically involved in transporting nutrients into cells and pushing out cellular waste.
