High Chlorophyll Content Found In Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass has been reported to help with cancer and arthritis. Chlorophyll is abundant in wheatgrass and is thought by many to fight against cancer and arthritis on the cellular level. Chlorophyll is the lifeline of plants and is thought to purify our blood, provide satiety (feeling full) and combat inflammation. Chlorophyll comprises approximately 70% of wheatgrass.

Increase Immunity By Supplementing Wheatgrass In Your Diet

Immune system properties have been boasted from anecdotal accounts to MDs weighing in on the subject matter. Many people have reported milder colds due to the high vitamin and mineral content contained within wheatgrass.

Rich Protein Sourced From Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass has an extremely robust nutrient profile. Vitamin A, B-complex, C, E, K, minerals, essential enzymes and amino acids in an optimally balanced ratio are all contained within. Given its high amino acid content, wheatgrass is rich in protein.

Anti-Aging Properties Found in Wheat Grass

People are touting wheatgrass’ anti-aging effects due to its high mineral content and amino acid profile. Basically providing your body with the necessary nutrients it needs to repair cells and diminish deleterious effects.

Wheatgrass Regulates Blood Glucose Levels

Wheatgrass is a great blood sugar regulator and can even help diabetics normalize their blood sugar. Anyone with diabetes should consult with their physician to determine an appropriate diet plan that factors in current medications.

Wheatgrass Has Effective Antibacterial Properties

Antibacterial properties were triggered by applying chlorophyll to infected wounds where there had been no response to conventional methods. Suppuration (pus formation) and odor were affected within 2-3 days. Chlorophyll was found to inhibit the initial growth (up to 16 hours) of certain bacteria and even kill some.

Staph Aureus is a common bacteria that can build up in wounds, open sores, cuts and can cause life threatening illness. This bacteria was inhibited with diluted chlorophyll and only grew after 24 hours of incubation. It was suggested that temperature as well as bacterial resistance may play a role [1].

Detox & Cleanse Your Brain & Body With Wheatgrass

As chlorophyll is absorbed into the bloodstream it passes through the liver and increases the detoxification and cleansing process by acting on phase II liver enzymes [2]. This promotes optimal liver health and subsequently results in our body’s natural elimination of harmful toxins resulting in liver purification. Since chlorophyll is also high in oxygen content, tissue oxygenation is benefited. This ability to cleanse our brain and increase tissue oxygenation makes wheatgrass a universal nootropic for improving your health.

Researchers studied the effects of wheatgrass on ulcerative colitis in a double blind, randomized placebo-controlled study. They sought to confirm or deny the claim that wheatgrass is beneficial for gastrointestinal health. Among 21 participants with ulcerative colitis, 19 completed the study.

It was determined that supplementation with wheatgrass was associated with significant reductions in overall disease activity index and in the severity of rectal bleeding. The disease activity index was 4 fold; rectal bleeding, number of bowel movements, sigmoidoscopic evaluation, and global assessment by a physician.

No serious side effects were found. The authors concluded that wheatgrass appeared effective and safe for the remedy of active, distal ulcerative colitis. They cite the antioxidant properties of four different compounds as contributors to health [3].

Additional antioxidants can be found in alpha lipoic acid and green tea's EGCG; providing powerful health benefits via detoxification.

WHEATGRASS NUTRIENT PROFILE

Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Selenium and many more minerals!

CALCIUM Benefits Of Wheatgrass

We know Calcium is good for strong bones and teeth but it also plays a major role in blood clotting after an injury, cell signaling, muscle contraction and nerve function.

IRON Benefits Of Wheatgrass

One ounce of wheatgrass contains approximately 60 mg of iron. Iron is involved in the formation of hemoglobin in our RBCs which transports oxygen throughout our body. Iron supports our immune system against bacterial infections [4]. Surprisingly many Americans are deficient in iron. The CDC reports that approximately 10% of women are deficient in iron.

Organ meat is rich in iron, but many cannot stomach the idea of consuming such a thing. Which is unfortunate because it’s the most nutrient dense meat available. Paleo people know what I’m talking about. Fortunately, meat eaters not inclined to eat organ meat and vegetarians and vegans can find solace in wheatgrass to provide them with additional iron.

MAGNESIUM Benefits Of Wheatgrass

Responsible for thousands of biochemical reactions daily with 300 plus enzyme reactions in the body. Magnesium is critical for transmitting nerve signals, metabolizing nutrients, contracting muscles, coagulating blood, producing energy, forming bones and cells.

SELENIUM Benefits Of Wheatgrass

When combined with Vitamin E the antioxidant effects are greater. Antioxidants fight free radicals and reduce inflammation which cause damage to particles in the brain and body. Free radical damage is thought to contribute to aging, risk of heart disease and cancer.

VITAMIN A Benefits Of Wheatgrass

A fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in wheatgrass. Vitamin A is important for proper organ function and boosts the immune system. In addition to working as an antioxidant that fights cellular damage, vitamin A strengthens tissues throughout our bodies, and promotes healthy vision, skin and bones.

B COMPLEX VITAMIN Benefits Of Wheatgrass

Your body needs B vitamins to maintain healthy skin, eyes, hair, liver and to ensure your nervous system is functioning optimally. B complex vitamins are the ultimate wingman to healthy eating, so your body can use all those magnificent nutrients you’re ingesting.

VITAMIN C Benefits Of Wheatgrass

Like B Vitamins, Vitamin C is water soluble. Essential for the growth and repair of all tissues in your body, It helps make Collagen. This is the composition of bone, teeth, ligaments, tendons, skin, cartilage and blood vessels and is largely responsible for healing wounds, repairing and maintaining teeth and bones.

VITAMIN E Benefits Of Wheatgrass

A fat soluble (processed in your body at a much slower rate than water soluble) antioxidant, which needs to be obtained via supplementation that is responsible for the proper function of many organs in the body. In everyday life Vitamin E helps protect us from air pollution, cataracts (eye disorders), premenstrual syndrome, and neurological diseases including Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes.

VITAMIN K Benefits Of Wheatgrass

Responsible for a diverse range of physiological functions. Present in the liver, heart, brain, bone, and pancreas. Vitamin K digests quickly with the majority being excreted in urine and feces. The remaining VK helps our blood clot and metabolizes bone. Adult males should consume around 120 mcg and females 90 mcg of VK. People taking heart/blood medications like Warfarin (Coumadin) should avoid high amounts of vitamin K. Other drug interactions.

WHEATGRASS PROFESSIONAL RECOMMENDATION

When it comes to bang for your buck wheatgrass is a real deal. Cheaper than most other vegetables with a more robust nutrient profile and high mineral density.

Starting out on wheatgrass shots can be tough for many to stomach. Powder supplements of wheatgrass benefit those who experience negative aspects from drinking it. Combined with an optimal formula, supplements containing wheatgrass are ever more effective. The potential reduction in nutrient value from raw liquid to powder form is largely negligible and can be far easier on your stomach.

If you struggle with raw liquid wheatgrass try it in powder form. You also want to be careful not to overdo the amount you start out with. 500mg or less than 1 ounce daily is a good place to start. Once your body adjusts you can add an additional dose in the afternoon/early evening.

Those with allergies should have their blood tested against every possible wheat derivative. Do not just assume that you have a gluten intolerance or allergy and therefore should avoid all things wheat. Often, this is just a product of a well marketed trend. You could easily be allergic to some other aspect of wheat and not gluten at all. So don’t guess, test.

Blood tests can be ordered through your primary care physician, chiropractors or a naturopath. It is beneficial to truly know what allergens you may have susceptibility towards. In many cases these lesser known allergens are responsible for your skin, hair, and nail problems and those are only the visible issues.

Detoxifying your body too quickly can cause ill sensations. A good reason to start with small doses (1g) or less daily, and to not attempt your first wheatgrass experience while on a fast.

SIDE EFFECTS OF WHEATGRASS

Due to the high vitamin K content, it is important to consult with your physician if you are currently taking any heart medications as they can be rendered ineffective or cause unforeseen complications.

Too much wheatgrass initially can leave you feeling nauseous and sick. Another reason why powder form wheatgrass in a smaller dose is easier on your digestive system.

Detoxing too quickly can also result in general malaise (nausea, headaches, fatigue). Do not make your first wheatgrass experience while initiating or on a fast. This will more than likely lead to a stomachache or even GI distress.

Per usual, young children, pregnant women and the elderly should consult their physician prior to starting a wheatgrass supplement. This has become an obvious boilerplate statement. The young, pregnant and elderly are just the most at risk groups for any physiological change. Nonetheless, better to be safe than sorry.

RECAP OF WHEATGRASS

Additional scientific studies are needed to confirm many of the claims made by wheatgrass proponents. However, the amount of anecdotal and self experimental evidence is overwhelming. Countless first hand experiences will attest to the efficacy of adding wheatgrass to your diet.

It’s only a matter of time until additional resources from powerful companies are poured into this kind of research as the general population continues to become more health conscious and demands healthy alternatives to our current, unhealthy American diet.
